Too Much Stuff (to be complaining)

Do any of you writers out there notice how after awhile all the she looked, she said, he crossed the room stuff can get really annoying? I know about filtering, but honestly I just try to write as organically as I can and hope that later on I'll find more inspiration. Also, I find that when I write I pretty much have to think about it all the time or I stall. But then the kids will ask me something and it's like I'm completely unavailable to them. You want what? What kind of sandwich did you ask for? What time is it? Blah.

Also, I cannot keep a clean house AT ALL while writing. It's impossible. But enough of the complaining.

I think I must be one of those people who can only focus on one thing at a time, which is bad because I'm always trying to do way too much. I've found that the best thing is to isolate and finish, or make a time schedule so I don't get stressed out. My old solution was to stay up all night, but that only made me miserable the rest of the day. Now, I just take a deep breath and do the best I can. How do you deal with multiple projects, and life in general?

I have a favor to ask, if you've read THE SOUL SEEKERS could you please leave a review on Amazon? If you have already, thank you. One thing I've noticed is how LUCKY I've been to have really in depth reviews. That's pretty darn cool! But you don't have to do that. If you want to leave one, you can be brief. And, of course, thank you, a million times, thank you.

Hope your day is going well. It's still hot here, but then it is August so what do I expect? Here's one of my favorite songs, but my apologies ahead of time. I posted it on twitter one time and got a response from a girl of: "My ears are bleeding!" Haha. To each their own. It's just a very vaudevillian song, and I love it. Wish I'd written it.

  1. A clean house is overrated sometimes. And it's still hot here. And humid.

  2. People who claim to be able to multitask are just kidding themselves. It's really just "one thing at a time" broken down into small snippets, and usually not done very well.

Be content in yourself. If you know you're doing your best, then beating yourself up for unmet expectations means you need to adjust your expectations.

And while I think Bob Dylan is a songwriting genius, I can completely understand the "bleeding ears", lol. My favorite Dylan songs are the ones that others recorded (Hendrix, the Dead, the Byrds, etc.).

    1. I appreciate the advice. Thank you, Chris.

And I know what you mean about liking covers of Dylan songs. Rick Nelson did a few that were really beautiful.

  3. I have a trivet that says, "A clean house is the sign of a cluttered mind." Clean house vs. Write--writing wins hands down.

  4. I've given up. With two big permanently moulting dogs, a wife with poor eyesight, and the world's messiest painter in the house, there's little point even trying to be tidy.

    Hot here too.

    1. p.s. For a truly BAD version of one of Dylan's songs, try Michel Montecrossa's rendering of 'If dogs run free'. DIRE!

  5. I'm exactly like you. One thing at a time. Isolate. Just get it done. Otherwise it never happens.

    1. Yeah. It's the only way. Last year I started to see how bad I was with my time, and that I might possibly have ADHD. Isolation is the answer.

  6. Dear Amy, I'm not able to do much multi-tasking either. Can't even listen to music while I write. The songs always evoke images and emotions and I stop moving my fingers over the keys. So I'm no help to you, but I trust that you'll work this out. You've done so much already with your life. Peace.

    1. Dee- there are many who can't listen to music when writing. I can see why it would be distracting.

  7. Very excited to pick up this book and will definitely review it for you once I've read it :) I'm also a fan of your nudge for tight writing. Have you checked out the six sentence writer network? It's a flashfiction site where writers post a whole story in 6 sentences. It's great practice. I think the web address is: www.sixsentences.ning.com. I just got signed by WiDo so I'm perusing everyone's sites and blogs. Nice to "meet" you!

  8. Great post! I haven't gotten to your book yet but I hope to soon and I'll definitely post a review when I do! I just try to isolate hours during the day when I can write. It doesn't happen every day but I'm very busy too so I totally feel your pain on that count. Like you, I've had lots of co-workers hate my music and tell me (especially the guys) that their ears are bleeding. :D But whatcha gonna do? You like what you like, right? :D Good luck with the writing!

    1. Liesel, that's woncerufl—thank you! Oh man, am I feeling the crunch of hours this week. Can't we all just be like Hermione and live in alternate times?
